During the eclipse, Phobos projected its uneven shadow over the. Mission operations are conducted jointly from Lockheed Martin and from JPL, a division of Caltech in Pasadena. The rover snapped the ethereal video of Mars’ potato-shaped moon, Phobos, moving across the face of the sun on April 2. The prime contractor for the Odyssey project, Lockheed Martin Space in Denver, developed and built the orbiter. THEMIS was built and is operated by Arizona State University in Tempe. Odyssey also serves an important role relaying commands and data for Mars' newest inhabitant, NASA's InSight lander. One of the sites Odyssey captured pictures of is Jezero Crater, the landing site for NASA's Perseverance rover, which launches to Mars this summer. It takes thousands of images of the Martian surface each month, many of which help scientists select landing sites for future missions. Odyssey has been orbiting Mars since 2001. Future observations will provide a more complete picture of the temperature extremes on the moon's surface." "These observations are also helping to characterize the composition of Phobos. Mars moon Phobos crosses the face of the sun, captured by NASA’s Perseverance rover with its Mastcam-Z camera. Scientists think the two lumpy bodies may. The other, Deimos, is even smaller than Phobos. Phobos and Deimos are too small to create total solar eclipses like the Moon does on Earth. This means that in 30-50 millions it will collide with the red planet or break up to form a ring like the ones in Saturn. "We're seeing that the surface of Phobos is relatively uniform and made up of very fine-grained materials," said Christopher Edwards of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, who leads the processing and analysis of the Phobos images. Phobos, which is about 157 times smaller than Earths moon, is one of Mars two natural satellites. Phobos, contrary to Deimos and the Moon, is moving closer to Mars. The Odyssey team plans to observe crescent phases in coming months, providing a comprehensive view of how Phobos' surface warms and cools as it rotates. The one exception is the eclipse image, which is computer-generated and shows what Phobos would have looked like if it wasn't in complete shadow.Ĭombined with three previous images, these observations represent waxing, waning and full views of the moon. Penzo (1984) suggested using tethers on Phobos and Deimos for space-elevators for a Mars transportation system. On March 27, 2020, Phobos was observed exiting an eclipse, when the surface was still warming up.Īll of the THEMIS infrared images are colorized to show temperature variations and are overlain on THEMIS visible-light images taken at the same time to show the geology of the surface. Phobos orbits Mars with a velocity of about2.15 km/s. 25, 2020, shows Phobos while in eclipse, where Mars' shadow completely blocked sunlight from reaching the moon's surface. This provided some of the coldest temperatures measured on Phobos to date, with the lowest being about minus 189 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 123 degrees Celsius). 9, 2019, shows Phobos in full-moon phase, when more of the surface is exposed to sunlight, with a maximum temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). Some craters have dark materials near the crater floors, some have regolith that slid down the crater walls, and some have very dark ejecta, possibly some of the darkest material in our Solar System.Among the three new images, the one taken Dec. Much more detail is seen inside the various-sized craters, showing some with marked albedo variations. It now may be possible to determine whether the grooves existed before the large cratering events, and exist deep within Phobos, or came after the cratering events and were superimposed on them. The global ‘groove’ network is seen in sufficient detail to cover the Mars-facing surface continuously from near the equator up to the north pole with regular spacing between the grooves. The Greek god Ares became Mars in the Roman adaptation of the deities. The US Viking Orbiter obtained a few small areas sampled at an even higher resolution of a few metres per pixel, but these were not so sharp due to the close and fast fly-by. Mars takes its name from the god of war in ancient Greek and Roman mythology. These images have surpassed all previous images from other missions in continuous coverage of the illuminated surface, not blurred and at the highest resolution. Phobos the closest of Mars' two moons is set to get ever closer to the planet, before its final descent, while Deimos will drift ever outwards until it leaves Mars' orbit. Always remember, the higher the rating, the better the light. One should always look for lumens per watt before buying led panel light. Make sure you check the lumens-per-watt rating. This is comparable to litres-per-100km for fuel-efficiency. The higher the lumens per watt, the more efficient an LED panel is. Lumens divided by power (Watts) gives a measure of the efficiency of an LED panel. The higher the lumens, the higher and better the light output. Lumens are a measure of the total light output. Deuterium occurs naturally in seawater (30 grams per cubic metre), which makes it very abundant relative to other energy resources. a On a mass basis, the D-T fusion reaction releases over four times as much energy as uranium fission. Each D-T fusion event releases 17.6 MeV (2.8 x 10 -12 joule, compared with 200 MeV for a U-235 fission and 3-4 MeV for D-D fusion). With current technology, the reaction most readily feasible is between the nuclei of the two heavy forms (isotopes) of hydrogen – deuterium (D) and tritium (T). According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the amount of power produced increases with the square of the pressure, so doubling the pressure leads to a fourfold increase in energy production. The aim of the controlled fusion research program is to achieve 'ignition', which occurs when enough fusion reactions take place for the process to become self-sustaining, with fresh fuel then being added to continue it. Once ignition is achieved, there is net energy yield – about four times as much as with nuclear fission. Fusion fuel – different isotopes of hydrogen – must be heated to extreme temperatures of the order of 50 million degrees Celsius, and must be kept stable under intense pressure, hence dense enough and confined for long enough to allow the nuclei to fuse. In the Sun, massive gravitational forces create the right conditions for fusion, but on Earth they are much harder to achieve. The nuclei can then fuse, causing a release of energy. Such conditions can occur when the temperature increases, causing the ions to move faster and eventually reach speeds high enough to bring the ions close enough together. However, if the conditions are such that the nuclei can overcome the electrostatic forces to the extent that they can come within a very close range of each other, then the attractive nuclear force (which binds protons and neutrons together in atomic nuclei) between the nuclei will outweigh the repulsive (electrostatic) force, allowing the nuclei to fuse together. Normally, fusion is not possible because the strongly repulsive electrostatic forces between the positively charged nuclei prevent them from getting close enough together to collide and for fusion to occur. Hydrogen, heated to very high temperatures changes from a gas to a plasma in which the negatively-charged electrons are separated from the positively-charged atomic nuclei (ions). But the cost and complexity of the devices involved increased to the point where international co-operation was the only way forward. The Fusion Industry Association report The Global Fusion Industry in 2022 said that $2.83 billion of new investment was declared by private nuclear fusion companies since the 2021 edition of the report.įusion powers the Sun and stars as hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium, and matter is converted into energy. Following a breakthrough at the Soviet tokamak, fusion research became 'big science' in the 1970s. Initially, fusion research in the USA and USSR was linked to atomic weapons development, and it remained classified until the 1958 Atoms for Peace conference in Geneva. Today, many countries take part in fusion research to some extent, led by the European Union, the USA, Russia and Japan, with vigorous programmes also under way in China, Brazil, Canada, and Korea. The main hope is centred on tokamak reactors and stellarators which confine a deuterium-tritium plasma magnetically. The fundamental challenge is to achieve a rate of heat emitted by a fusion plasma that exceeds the rate of energy injected into the plasma.Fusion power offers the prospect of an almost inexhaustible source of energy for future generations, but it also presents so far unresolved engineering challenges. I read here that sprites were usually 8x8 or 8x16. However, I downloaded the sprites here: and opened up the image in paint and mario is typically in dimensions not divisible by 8 pixels.įor example: the mario with the racoon tail is 21x28px and the regular big mario is 14x27px. #SUPER MARIO WORLD SPRITES POWER UPS FULL#Įven Mario running at full speed in 19x26px. I'm guessing the sprites were 24x32px to hold the big mario characters. How did they do collision detection where there was no pixels in the sprite? Would Mario actually hit something a few pixels early? Or would they calculate it appropriately? Why did they not use up the whole dimensions? I would think they would want to use up as much as possible, at least maxing out the length or width. I have looked on various wikis, but I did not find anything mentioning how the character sprite breakdown worked for the SMB3. There's usually a common misunderstanding that sprites always tile up together to form a solid divisible-by-8 formations on all axes, but there is absolutely no reason for this. It's applying limitations of the background grid ("nametable" on NES) to the sprite system, which is a completely different beast. The entire strength of a hardware sprite is its ability to go "off the grid", and every 8x8 or 8x16 sprite on the system behaves as a completely individual entity - at least on the hardware. The programming of the game will probably handle them in bunches known as "metasprites" (multiple hardware sprites making up a bigger sprite as you're describing).Įspecially on the NES it's very common to let sprites overlap - maybe to save graphics data for animations, or simply to allow more colors - a popular example being Mega Man's face, which uses a different palette than his armor. But this is actually more often the rule than the exception when it comes to NES games. #SUPER MARIO WORLD SPRITES POWER UPS SOFTWARE#įor an example of really clever and safe conserving use of metasprites, check out this post about how Blaster Master does it:Īs for the collision detection, that's entirely a software thing! The graphics have no relation to collisions at all, so never trust what you see. Usually, well-made games will always have a hitbox on your character that is smaller than the size of its sprite. The NES isn't even able to do hardware per-pixel collision detection (except on a single sprite, a feature that is never used for gameplay purposes) - that kind of design kind of died out with the Atari 2600. :)įinally, I'd like to point out you are right - any transparent pixels padding the edge of an individual 8x8 or 8x16 sprite IS a waste of data, but working outside of the 8/16 pixel constraints usually helps giving the game a more natural, dynamic look, which became even more common in the 16bit generation. This is probably one of the reasons SMB3 is usually considered one of the better looking games of the NES, some times appearing more like a SNES game with fewer colors. You'd think after 23 years society would have mined a game as popular as Super Mario World of all its secrets, but you'd be wrong. #SUPER MARIO WORLD SPRITES POWER UPS SOFTWARE#.#SUPER MARIO WORLD SPRITES POWER UPS FULL#. I'm close to trying a 3DBenchy with Repetier now. It times like these that I could do with another one, as the more you print the more you want to test. The first picture is a realtime snapshot of the 3D printer movements. The second picture picture is all direct to print Repetier testing samples with some earlier Slic3r settings that worked in Robox Slicer Extension, and the last picture is shows the aborted models, with the modded Slic3r settings. They are just back to backs to aid in comparison later, as the other Robox is dedicated to Simplif圓D** optimisation with the QuickFill head. The results are better than AutoMaker with the DEV1 head, and almost on par with Simplify 3D, so in the second picture Repetier Host is the LH cube, the RH clusters are Simplif圓D and the ones at the back are all Automaker with the DEV1 head. This is my first of todays Repetier prints direct to the Robox via Slic3r, and I’ve added Start & End scripts to do this, which are still work in progress. I’ve resolved the first layer ooze, and successfully getting a first layer down without brim or skirt. The small squares on the left are my attempts at Repetier printing with the DEV1 head and PET-G, the other two to the right are AutoMaker with the DEV1 head, and then the next four are tweaking attempts to Simplify 3D using the 0.3mm QuickFill nozzle, and then the 0.8mm nozzle. The light blue TechABS cube on the trackpad front left is a Simplif圓D is a QuickFill 0.8mm print, the middle column on the trackpad is Automaker with the DEV1 head, and the right hand ones are Simplify 3D with the DEV1. It is interesting how some of the slicers treat the model, and they do slice differently re print sequencing. Admittedly this is with a DEV1 head, but I am using this to explore proper retraction settings, using a slicer I can adjust rather than the default version in AutoMaker. There is a little issue with ooze and first layer height & lay down that will need a tweak, as I am using a skirt to try and sort this up to press, but the infill settings are working nicely nicely. :)Īs a parallel project, I thought I'd look at Repetier Host, and that too can do the same, as in talk direct to the Robox, as well as use a non Prusa version of Slicer, which is pretty damn cool.Īt the moment, after a couple of hours per days, I have been optimising the Slic3r configuration to get the 20x20x3 slab to print, and I've just had my first success a few minutes ago. The short answer is yes, and Simplif圓D (with settings, scripts additions and post processing) will do a direct to print just like AutoMaker, and I am currently playing with this, moving from simple 20x20x3 flat slabs to a 20x20x20 cube with a hole through it, and it's looking pretty damn impressive now. I have been playing with one of those new fangled sun dragon god whatevers, and as it has no needle valves and nozzle closing, my curiosity was irked enough to see whether I could get the Robox to behave like any other printer and see if other softwares can see it. This is an odd one not sure where to post this, but it is purely experimental and for the curious, and all the warranty guff applies. Not to worry though, as the stage blood is 100 percent washable.”Īlong with Hansmann, Northey said he believes the messages this play sends to audience members will be more rewarding than anything else. “The show features extensive fight choreography, including projectile blood effects that will splatter patrons in the first few rows. “One exciting element for this production will be a designated splash zone in the audience,” Northey said. She was nervous about working with all women, but quickly found the cast is “supportive, kind, hilarious, hard-working and considerate.” But the all-female cast is not the only piece of the show that will interest audience members. This confidence did not come immediately for Hansmann. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Hansmann said. I’ve had the opportunity to learn unarmed and rapier stage combat. “I’ve been able to tap into darker corners of my psyche, which is always fun. The acting possibilities offered to Hansmann were ones she gladly took full advantage of. Greed, ambition, lust, cruelty and betrayal are not unique to one gender.” “I don’t really think about portraying my role as female or male,” she continued. She has played the roles of Viola in “Twelfth Night,” Marina in “Pericles,” and Mustardseed in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” She believes audiences will be drawn to the all-female cast for nothing more than curiosity. “Milwaukee actresses are able to seize an otherwise inaccessible opportunity and the all-female cast enhances the context of this classic play, underscoring themes of gender and power within the text.”Īctress Amy Hansmann, who plays the role of Macbeth in the production, continues her experience with Shakespearean plays at Soulstice. Northey said the play fulfills that mission through the unique casting style. “Shakespeare’s characters are some of the most well-known and beloved in the world of theatre,” he said. “This all-female production of “Macbeth” addresses that mission in numerous ways.” “Soulstice Theatre continually strives to serve its mission by creating meaningful theatre that challenges, inspires and entertains,” Northey said. Marketing director Matthew Northey described this innovative twist of “Macbeth” that was made a reality by technical director Catherine Jones. The show is set just after World War I, allowing for a creative turn on this classic story. The production features an all-female cast that portrays each character of the play as female. A spin on the Shakespearean tale, “Macbeth,” comes to life this January at the Soulstice Theatre in Milwaukee. |
